80th ANNIVERSARY OF VJ DAY
The 80th Anniversary of VJ Day, the final end of the Second
World War, will be commemorated by the Liss Branch of the
Royal British Legion with the raising of the Union Flag at the
RBL Club in Rake Road at 0900 on Friday, the 15th of August.
At 1200, the same time as the National Commemoration, we
will gather for the Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial,
laying of a wreath and short service. All are welcome to
attend.
In 1948 thirty-two names of those from the village who died
during the 2nd World War, or as a result of that conflict, were
added to the fourth side of the Memorial obelisk and the top
two tiers of the plinth, together with an inscription: ‘Also to
Commemorate the fallen in the Second World War 1939 –
1945.’ Three other soldiers, who died during or shortly after
the 2nd World War, are buried in St Mary’s Churchyard, Liss.
There will be further events on Saturday, 16th of August at the
Legion Club starting at 1400. All are welcome!
